For the most up-to-date information about the status of our project, check our project updates on Kickstarter!

What is Piepacker?

Piepacker is a multiplayer gaming platform to play retro games with friends online. You can play games from our built-in catalogue for free or bring your own games to the platform. Piepacker is equipped with a video chat with AR 3D masks to see and talk to the people you are playing with. No installation is required to enjoy Piepacker, it all works directly from a web browser.

Is Piepacker legal?

Piepacker is proud to be an alternative to online piracy and share value creation with creators: Piepacker secures legit licensing deals with each game publisher. We have the rights to distribute every game on the platform. Furthermore, if you already own retro games at home (whether digital or physical), BYOG (Bring Your Own Game) and our PieReader will allow you to bring them to the platform to play with your friends online.

Do I need an internet connection?

Piepacker is a gaming streaming platform so it does require an internet connection. But good news is: thanks to in-house developed technology even low-debit connections users should be able to enjoy a great multiplayer experience in most places covered by our service. Additionally, our local mode guarantees an optimum experience even with the lowest connection. Last but not least, we are working on an offline mode that will be similar to Netflix’s.

Why a Kickstarter campaign?

We’ve been overwhelmed by the feedback from our closed beta users in 2020. In fact, their biggest ask has been to be able to bring their own games to play with their friends. While we are always hunting for new classic titles to license and brainstorming new original multiplayer concepts, we firmly believe that retrogaming fans’ collections deserve a new life, online, on Piepacker. The idea of a cartridge reader connected to Piepacker -the PieReader- started as a fun concept born in the middle of the pandemic. And was the physical counterpart of the digital bring your own ROM solution we were working on. When our prototype finally worked, we realized how magical this accessory could be. A kickstarter campaign to introduce our platform with its accessory felt like the next natural step!

Are the Kickstarter rewards exclusive?

ALL rewards we’ve gathered for this Kickstarter are totally exclusive and will never happen again: the early access to our platform, the Lifetime Premium membership and the PieReader as for this first ever production batch (their design will be unique). Finally, on the pricing perspective all deals are including strong packaged discounts which are also exclusive to our Kickstarter backers.

Is Piepacker free?

Later in 2021, Piepacker will be totally free to access but it will feature a premium membership available for players who want to enjoy the full range of our capabilities such as BYOG (Bring Your Own Game), rewind powers, HD graphics, new game modes and new ways to play your favorite games. Backers will be the first ones to access all these new features. We’ll communicate more on all future beta features in our Discord channel.

Can I use my own games? How does it work?

All the pre-built games are playable online in multiplayer with connected friends. To bring your own games (BYOG), you have two options. Physical BYOG: we have built the cartridge reader PieReader (an official Piepacker’s accessory) which is our main Kickstarter reward. NES, SNES and Genesis / Mega Drive cartridges are compatible with it. Digital BYOG: if you have legally acquired digital games (ROMs), Piepacker allows you to play them in multiplayer with friends through your own private game room. The ROM is never sent nor shared with your friends. Piepacker is only sharing the video feed and the game input on the same screen. Our platform is compliant with all regulations in the countries where it is available.

What is the PieReader?

The PieReader is a modulable device (there’s a different adapter for each console system) that allows you to bring your own cartridges to the Piepacker environment only, adding online multiplayer, video chat and all our current and future features such as 3D Masks, saves in the cloud, achievements, leaderboards etc…

Do I need a PieReader to play on Piepacker?

Absolutely not! Piepacker is a gaming platform containing its own pre-installed & ready to play games. The PieReader is a supplement to the platform so that you can play with your good old physical cartridges.

Do I need a premium membership to connect my PieReader and enjoy it on Piepacker?

No sir! Your PieReader will work directly with no strings attached. Connect, invite friends, play!

PieReader: Why is it different from the original consoles?

Our PieReader allows you to play with friends all around the world and connects to your computer via a USB cable. Original consoles required you to be together and play from the same place. Additionally, thanks to its modular design, you can read cartridges from multiple consoles with one same device.

Last updated: April 20, 2021 07:33

What is the difference between the PieReader and another cartridge reader?

Since game ROMs cannot be duplicated or distributed to other people, the PieReader does not allow you to dump and save your game like most cartridge dumpers. It’s a read only process that only works on our platform. The ROM is executed on a private instance owned by the user and only the video stream is shared with other players, not the game data itself.

What is the difference between RetroArch and Piepacker?

There are fundamental differences between Piepacker and Retroach. While both projects are multi-console platforms, RetroArch is an open source downloadable application which users need to install and configure themselves whereas Piepacker is a proprietary web application that is ready to use. Piepacker focuses on the online multiplayer and makes it as simple and instantaneous as possible. There’s no network configuration required. All it takes is to copy paste a link to invite your friends to play directly from their web browser. Lastly, we integrated a video chat to talk and see the friends you are playing with.

Are you planning to make the PieReader compatible with more game systems in the future?

Our vision for the PieReader goes beyond the initial set of compatible systems to be a universal reader for retro games. However, in a short-term perspective, we are first and foremost focused on delivering a great product which nails what we have included in our Kickstarter project: NES, SNES and SEGA Genesis. The development of other compatible systems is still planned but in a more distant future.

Which games will be available on the platform?

Our current catalogue comes with games for NES, SNES, SEGA Genesis, PS1, GBA and Arcade. We are constantly adding new games to the platform and we currently have more than 60 retro games including top tier indie games. We are counting on our backer’s support so we can convince more licensors to join us, as well as create in-house new original multiplayer concepts using our unique social interactions. Here is the final list of 60+ retro and indie games available in Piepacker starting from May 8th: Worms: World Party, Earthworm Jim 2, Sensible Soccer: European Champions - 92/93 Edition, Micro Mages, Xeno Crisis, Rage of the Dragons, Star Versus, Twin Dragons, Böbl, Super Bat Puncher, Haunted Halloween 86, X2: No Relief, Addiction Pinball, Worms Blast, The Gadget Twins, Brutal Sports Football (Beastball), Dragon View, Motor Mash, Evolution Soccer, Street Racer, Ultimate Tennis, Glover, Alligator Hunt, Radical Rex, Soccer Kid, Invasion from Beyond, Winter Challenge, Summer Challenge, Barkley Shut up and Jam 2, Iron Commando, Zero Tolerance, 40 Winks, Blender Bros, Football Madness, The Humans, Earthworm Jim, Loaded, Descent Maximum, Nebs n Debs, Alter Ego, Gluf, Old Tower, Yazzie, Misplaced, Super Paw-N, FoxKids.com Micro Maniacs Racing, Sensible Soccer ‘98: European Club Edition, Psycho Pinball, and more to be announced soon.

Only retro games?

We also love modern independent video games like Celeste, The Binding of Isaac or Towerfall, and we are working on bringing modern indie games and board games to the catalogue, where we see a huge potential for multiplayer!

Last updated: April 20, 2021 07:33

Will the games stay on the platform for a limited time or be there forever?

Let’s be honest: we’re planning and hoping they’ll be there forever! As Piepacker is a legal gaming platform though, we will follow and respect our Licensor’s agreements: they will have the final word on this. This being said, the best intel we can share to you is the more players we have on our platform, the more reason they would have to continue proposing their games to the community! :)

Last updated: April 20, 2021 07:33

With how many friends can I play with on the platform?

For each game session you create on Piepacker, you will be able to play your game in multiplayer mode with up to 4 players. We are working on increasing the number of users per game room for games supporting more than 4 players.

Last updated: April 20, 2021 07:33

What is the platform’s compatibility?

For now, Piepacker is available on computer through Chrome & Edge browsers. Our end goal is to be available on any device (computer, mobile, TV) and any browser in the future. Compatibility with other browsers is currently planned for the second half of 2021.

Last updated: April 20, 2021 07:33

What controllers are compatible with Piepacker?

ANY controller will work as stated in our Kickstarter page, and we mean it. We haven’t found one controller not compatible yet and we can confirm that technically speaking we can add anything as a controller, it just takes a little setup on our end. Rest assured all mainstream controllers work for now.

Last updated: April 20, 2021 07:33

In which countries will Piepacker be available?

The platform will be available worldwide for backers as soon as the early access opens! Certain games or features might not be available for certain countries as per limited rights or local regulations.

Last updated: April 20, 2021 07:33

How does the location impacts Piepacker’s stability?

Playing solo, your experience should be consistent as the game runs in parts locally. However, while playing with other people, quality of service is dependent on the physical proximity of each player to our servers. The good news is that because of our unique system other people’s weak connections won’t impact your own experience. Most of our servers are currently in Europe and North America, these geos will experience a more consistent quality of network. However please note we are already expanding our number of servers in new regions. And last but not least we are soon deploying a peer-to-peer technology to remove any dependency from servers. This technology will be particularly good in locations still working on their internet infrastructure.

When will my subscription start for Premium membership?

All Premium membership accounts will be activated on May 22nd, 2021, that is just after the end of our Kickstarter campaign: ready to go and PLAY!

Last updated: April 20, 2021 07:33

How can I purchase adapters for the PieReader, choose mine, and when they’ll be available?

The PieReader adapters can only be purchased during this Kickstarter campaign and will not be available for sale in the near future. At least 1 adapter is included in each PieReader pack (note some of our most exclusive packs have all three of them included). If you would like to have more than one adapter, they are available as an add-on to any pack with a PieReader: in your process of pledging to your package, just add 1 or 2 extra adapters in your pack, and that’s how you’ll get as many adapters as you want! At the end of our campaign we will ask all PieReaders backers to choose the adapter(s) we should include in their package (you can choose among NES, SNES, Genesis/Mega Drive). All adapters will be produced and available at the same time as your PieReader.

Last updated: April 20, 2021 07:33

When will the PieReader be available for shipping?

We are working hard to get the PieReader to you as quickly as possible! Depending on the Kickstarter outcome and total volume of PieReaders pre-ordered the manufacturing process will vary and we will keep you updated. In any case, in all our planned scenarios we are targeting to have our production batches completed by autumn 2021 to be sure, in a worse case scenario, that everyone will get its PieReader in November 2021.

Last updated: April 20, 2021 07:33

Shipping not included: What will I end up paying and what’s the procedure?

At the end of our campaign we will contact each backer to ask where their products should be shipped to, and ask consequently our shipping partner the total cost for delivering your packages to you. Please note: We would like to stress we do not take any margin on the cost provided by our shipping partner and directly reflect this cost back to you in full transparency, also we will, whenever possible, fit your order in one package to avoid multiple shipping items & related costs (only the Dome must in any case be shipped separately). We will then collect this shipping cost directly from you (fully loaded cost, including any custom taxes if applicable to your location) without any additional fees before proceeding to fulfill your order. If the cost of shipping & duties turns out to be out of budget for you, you can cancel your order and we will reimburse your pledge in full.

Last updated: April 20, 2021 07:33

What if the PieReader doesn’t work?

We have tested it in multiple conditions and we see no reason it should not work. But assuming the worst, and say your package was mistreated, like fell into water and your PieReader got flooded or something, we’ll send you another one free of charge. In any case, if your PieReader turns out to have any unforeseen issue we’ll be there for you.

Last updated: April 20, 2021 07:33

Can I cancel my order and be refunded after pledging?

On Kickstarter you pay only at the end of the campaign if it reaches its goal, pledges can be cancelled at any time before the end of the campaign. If at any time you wish to be refunded once the Kickstarter campaign has ended, this is totally possible for all pledges that haven’t been fulfilled yet. If you didn’t receive your reward (whether it is a membership access or the PieReader), feel free to contact us and we will process to refund you with no additional costs.

Last updated: April 20, 2021 07:33

What are the plans for the future?

We have so many great new features coming, some of which we have disclosed in our Kickstarter page. In fact we are overwhelmed with ideas from our players, partners, and licensors to improve even more the application of our technology which combines multiplayer remote gaming with videoconferencing and AR… we are always open to suggestions from our most favorite community: our players. Although we can’t commit in terms of timeline and won’t take this risk as we do not want to disappoint our followers, we will do our best to have most features out of the oven as soon as humanly possible! Some of our most important ‘short-term’ focuses remain mobile compatibility and all browser compatibility.

It’s time to make your dream happen: create a video game!

The Guest Producer will be able to create a game concept from scratch with our game team and draft an art direction for the game. This person will be an active contributor to the story and universe of the game.

We will make sure the experience is as fun as possible and one of a lifetime memory. As collaboration with Piepacker, it’s a two-way discussion to make sure the game can both make you proud and be as good as possible to be enjoyed by our fans.

Therefore, as a commercial product, Piepacker needs to make sure the game produced is safe for everyone, respecting laws and regulations of the territories its distributed and will be fit for our community.

Not limited to but including the game concept, art style and story are to be validated by the lead producer. The role of the Guest Producer is consultative with a direct access to the lead produce. The game is the property of Piepacker Inc. and there’s no revenue sharing with the game producer. The Guest Producer will appear first in the credit and able to test and feedback all available prototypes.

We are extremely excited to live this unique experience with the Guest Producer and make this person feels part of the Piepacker family.

The game production should start during the Summer 2021 and the game to be released in 2022.

BackerKit FAQ

What is BackerKit?

BackerKit is a service that crowdfunded project creators use to keep track of hundreds to tens of thousands of backers—from shipping details, pledge levels, preferences and quantities, whether they have paid or had their card declined, special notes, and everything in between!

The BackerKit software and support team is independent from the campaign’s project team—BackerKit does not handle the actual reward shipping. For more information about the preparation or delivery status of your rewards, please check the project's updates page.

How does BackerKit work?

After the campaign ends, the project creator will send you an email with a unique link to your survey. You can check out a walkthrough of the process here.

I never received my invitation. How do I complete the survey?

The most common reasons for not receiving a survey email is that you may be checking an email inbox different from the email address you used to sign up with Kickstarter, Indiegogo or Tilt Pro account, or it may be caught in your spam filter.

Confirm that the email address you are searching matches the email address tied to your Kickstarter, Indiegogo, or Tilt Pro account. If that doesn’t work, then try checking your spam, junk or promotions folders. You can also search for "backerkit” in your inbox.

To resend the survey to yourself, visit the project page and input the email address associated with your Kickstarter, Indiegogo or Tilt Pro account.

How do I update my shipping address?

BackerKit allows you to update your shipping address until the shipping addresses are locked by the project creator. To update your address, go back to your BackerKit survey by inputting your email here.

When will my order be shipped, charged or locked?

That is handled directly by the project creator. BackerKit functions independently of the project itself, so we do not have control of their physical shipping timeline. If you want to check on the project’s status, we recommend reading over the project's updates page.

I completed the survey, but haven't received my rewards yet. When will they arrive?

As BackerKit does not actually handle any rewards or shipping, the best way to stay updated on the shipping timeline would be to check out the project's updates page.
